Ballast Water Management – Treatment Unit Retrofitting Solutions
According to new regulations and aggreements from today to next six years, ballast water treatment units will be mandotary for all kind of vessels. IMO approval of the systems are completed and USCG approvals are going on. We believe, there will be huge problem about retrofitting of that systems and can create so much problems for marine industry.
We are serving retrofitting soutions to our customers during the floating condition. Our certified pipe and steel welders are serving on board solution with a guidence of our Marine Engineers and also manufacturer inspector.
- Initial and final design including 3D modelling of the system (all over the world ports, yards etc.), class approval drawings preparations,pre-fabrication drawings,
- Floating retrofitting solutions according to manufacturer instructions,
- Retrofitting solutions with project planning systems,
- Pipe line and valve modifications as per installation drawings,
- Agreement with world wide ballast water treatment unit manufacturers for retrofitting or maintenance solutions in Turkey, Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Caspian Sea area.
What We Are Doing About BWTS Retrofits?
During the retrofit projects we are managing all kinds of service which is listed below;
- Initial inspections for preparation of repair specifications,
- Yard comparisons and selection service according to technical capabilities, budgets and concept,
- Managing of all kinds of repair activities as a repair consultancy teams (Project management, planning, special repair activities etc.),
- Fabrication of out-fittings with our own team,
- Floating repairs (steel renewals, pipe modifications, coating applications, mechanical repairs etc.) in ports, anchorage areas.
In addition to repair activities we are giving project planning and managing service to new building projects or conversions. During the projects our aim to complete the project on time within budget and in good quality according to class rules.
Technical Team for Ballast Water Management,
About Ballast Water Management Systems, our company is serving turnkey technical service concept to ship owners and also Ballast Water Treatment Manufacturers. Our team is experienced about designing and modelling of the system according to vessel equipment arrangements.
We have 3 seperate project teams are incharge for vessel inspections and installation projects. These seperate teams are managing design process, 3D modellings, class approvals, prefabrications and also onboard installations.
How We Are Working?
Our working principles are mainly focus on fully customer satisfaction with our services, quotations, quality and on time solutions. About ballast water management project details are given below.
1. Onboard Inspections and Design Period
- Onboard Inspections
With our 2 engineers we are serving onboard inspections for system installations for each special projects. Before team departure to vessel (ports, anchorage areas in foreign countries) related engineers are checking the vessel drawings. According to engine room arrangements, pump room arrangements and also tank arrangements team is planning general BWT unit arrangements according to initial drawings. General dimensions of the BWT unit’s arrangements are planned during that inspection.
After attending to the vessel inspection team is checking all the details on locations according to manufacturer instructions. After completion of general BWT unit arrangements the inspection team start to discuss with vessel team to confirm latest arrangements for new units and start to measure related items and locations for class and installation drawings.
Inspection team is completing the initial onboard inspections between 6 hours – 24 hours (can be more for complicated systems or vessel arrangements) according to vessel sizes, equipment arrangements and also manufacturer parts. Normally that inspections can also handle with 3D scanning systems but it takes 48 – 72 hours. That way can also be useful for class drawings but for installations it can create some problems because of design and inspection team mentality differences.
- Design Process for Class Approval
After onboard inspections design team is preparing class approval drawings according to class rules. These drawings are completing in 48 hours and sharing with owner or/and with BWT manufacturer for approvals. During the design process inspection teams are also managing approval process.
- Design Process for Yard Application
Design process is going on with general drawing preparations. Initially design (Inspection ~ same team) team preparing 3D modelling of the BWT units new pipe lines, out-fittings (foundation of the units, fitting and valve arrangements etc.) and tank modifications on TRIBON M3 and AutoCAD software’s.
After 3D modelling of the parts and new lines if its possible inspection team can visit the vessel second time for cross check the dimensions and arrangements on locations. Up to now none of our customer has enough time for second inspection but also none of our project has a problem about our drawings.
As an output of that 3D modellings are;
- Pipe modifications,
- Equipment arrangements,
- Pipe and valve part lists,
- Out-fitting part lists,
With that lists owner can manage BWM modification process include budget calculations for yard quotations.
- Prefabrication of Out-fittings and Pipe Lines
After confirmation of the drawings prefabrication of new lines and also foundation fabrications of the BWT units can start in our workshops. Before vessel arrivals to yard area 90 – 95 % of the lines can complete with galvanizing/epoxy coating. Foundations of the BWT units can be manufacturer as per 3D models.
2. Yard Modification and Commissioning Process
Our system is working with good planning and managing systems. For that reason our team is try to complete all drawing approvals, prefabrication of the lines and out-fittings before vessel arrivals. During the docking process all ballast lines are free to modifications. For commissioning process listed items need to be followed by commissioning teams.
- Transportation of Equipment’s In Engine Room
Each units have some heavy parts and also about the dimensions it’s not easy to transfer in engine room. Some parts could not pass from sky light of the vessel and may need some access from hull or deck area. And during the engine room transportations some additional pad eye welding have to be carry out by yard teams. That transportation drawings can also prepare for safe operations.
- Chemical Tank Fabrication Process (If needed)
With some BWT systems needs additional chemical storage tanks. Normally old vessels have no spare tanks for that kind of storages. For that reason yard have to fabricated new tanks in aft peak tanks, void spaces or on hull side. That tank have to be approved by class society. After some steel modifications new tanks (with level gauges, fitting etc.) have to be welded and tested with pressure (air/fresh water) according to class rules.
After completion of new tank fabrication, suitable coating system have to be carry out inside the tank. New lines from tank to BWT system have to be fixed as per drawings.
- Outfitting Works
Foundation of the units have to be started after vessel arrival. That foundations welding and coating works have to be completed before equipment’s transportations. Cross check of the dimensions and also bolted connection areas can be arrange after transportations.
- Pipe Line Fabrications
- Workshop Fabrications
Most of the pipes can be completed before docking of the vessel. For ballast line connections, system have to be free of water. During the prefabrication periods some parts have loose flanges and some spool parts have 50 – 300 mm extra lengths for modification misalignment problems.
After completion of welding and mechanical on pipes there can be some galvanizing and/or coating process. According to that process for galvanizing works acid cleanings can be carry out by approved galvanize companies and also 60 µ – 80 µ hot dip galvanize application can be carry out. According to owner request pipes can be blasted and painted.
- Onboard Fabrications
And also some lines like chemical dosage tank connections have to be fabricated onboard. During that onboard fabrications there can be some modifications. In addition to that main line connections and also some unit connections flange and line connections can be done during after fitting of workshop fabricated parts.
All lines pressure tests have to be carry out before fixing or after completion of welding before undocking operations.
- Cabling Works
All cabling works (in engine room and cargo control room sensor connections etc.) have to be carry out synchronized with pipe and modification works. Connections, bulkhead penetrations and cable ways have to be arranged properly.
In our drawing systems we will also share bulkhead penetration pieces (with class approved systems) and also if required all cable ways we can insert for general design. Detail cabling works can be carry out during the installation. We have experienced sub – contractor for cabling works.
- Commissioning
Commissioning service can be handle with manufacturer service engineers. Our aim is handle also that works with our teams in Turkey and nearby countries. After some projects our team can complete the whole project with daily reports to manufacturer offices (photos reports, SKYPE meetings, periscope etc.) with some online connections. Last days of the project manufacturer service engineer can attend and complete the project.
